Flip Flop Giraffe

Click here to watch “Flip Flop Flotsam,” the award-winning documentary by Journeyman Pictures, and see why UniquEco’s work is so important.

Living in Southern California, we go through a lot of flip flops. So we were thrilled to find this innovative, Kenya-based eco-business that turns used flip flops into one-of-a-kind jewelry and sculptures as well as practical pieces like laptop bags and belts.

Julie Church and Tahreni Bwanaali founded UniquEco in 2005 after seeing the devastating effect that flip flops discarded on the East African coastline was having on the marine eco-system. Inspired by local women and children making cushions and toys out of this washed-up trash, they decided to create a company that would help the environment, provide work for the community and design unique objects for art lovers around the world.

Last year alone, UniquEco recycled 44,000 flip flops and the company has been named a finalist in the prestigious World Challenge ’08, a global competition aimed at rewarding grassroots small businesses that are truly making a difference. Learn more about UniquEco by clicking on the "About Us" section of their website, then shop here for truly unique items made from recycled flip flops. UniquEco is making such an impact that next to your newspaper and plastic recycling bins, get ready to add one for flip flips!
